You pose an interesting question when you ask us to consider the value
that comes with training and the scope for the creative combination of
training within an organisation development-led process. Many of us in the
T&D field are evaluating the professional future of a "trainer" title much
because of the limitations that are associated with it. This image of
trainer as task instructer is relatively new; when I started the training
profession, I saw my job (and was seen by others) as a change agent. The
OD folks and Quality folks preempted that image for themselves an the
training departments and trainers limited their corporate roles. Which
brings us to the question: have we thrown out the baby with the bathwater
in relegating skilled trainers to such a limited focus.

Perhaps OD folks should ask the training folks how to better incorporate
their skills and talents as partners in change activities. My guess is
they have the answers and are just waiting for someone to ask the
questions.
