In response to statistics that 80% of 18-24 year olds have high school
diplomas, and 6% have equivalency degrees, Eric says "Note that at least
some of the 14% of 18-24 year olds who have neither a high school diploma
nor an equivalency certificate are still in high school or are preparing
for an equivalency examination, and thus should not be counted in the
dropout statistics (unless the report is really talking about "18-24 year
olds who are *not currently attending high school*."
The report specifically excludes any 18-24 year olds attending any high
school or equivalency program. Therefore the original stats hold. Note,
however, in a later post, I said that since we heavily undercount
minorities and economically disadvantaged in our statistics in general,
there is an excellent chance the true rates are significantly higher.
