Barry Mallis writes about monetary rewards being clearly low or lowest on
the list of recognition. It's simply not what organization members want.

Not being an HR professional (just an engineering "individual
contributor," I find that engineers and scientists want fair compensation
(that is they want to be able to support their families, send the kids to
college, take an occasional vacation, etc.) and they want to see
reasonable salary progress. As companies are not passing on their record
profits in salary to the work force, monetary rewards like bonuses and
awards are becoming necessary to many working families. As such monetary
rewards are not rewards at all.
