I think it was Elizabeth Kubler-Ross who described the stages of
acceptance of impending death. Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and
Acceptance. These stages can be spotted in people dealing with dramatic
life changes as well.
My sense is that some of the people who do not try to "reinvent"
themselves are still in denial. I've been in union meetings where members
have argued that the company is not really in trouble, that the latest
dire predictions are a management ploy, and that the company could "save
us" if it wanted to.
Here, there is an issue of trust that clouds the example, but this
is played out over and over. And, it's not just the laborers who can get
caught in denial. An engineer friend of mine was told he would be laid
off along with 23 others. He watched Oprah every day until his bank
account ran out.
