In the case of the Marines, as it is with other branches of the military,
I see that the ability to accomlish its objectives in a coordinated and
integrated way is mostly due to the convergence of the worker's purpose
and the porpose of work (This notion comes from A. Koopman, "Transcultural
Management"). The great majority of people in the military have accepted
the overall mission, tasks, etc., of the institution as something they
want too! So it is not very difficult to get members to understand and
accept the value of the tasks they perform. The military are much more
effective in selling their vision, mission, objectives, etc., to their
members than most other organizations. And, yes! The socialization
process starts at boot camp, and continues from then on until the person's
retirement years down the road! It also helps that the military is the
extreme example of people who, for the most part, stay with that
institution for many years!
