Host's Note: Mary Margaret established a Usenet newsgroup
"" a few months ago. If you are interested in
facilitation of groups and can read usenet, I highly recommend that you
follow the procedure below to vote in favor of the proposal to make the
group a "moderated" newsgroup. That means that someone will review all
messages before they are distributed, just as I do here. Voting will not
subscribe you for anything, just helps get the moderated facility going.

-- Rick Karash,, host for learning-org

Attached is the CFV for going moderated. If
you wish to vote on this, please read the attached and follow the
instructions for voting. PLEASE DO NOT SEND VOTES TO THE LIST OR TO
THE POSTER. If you have questions about m.b.f or this CFV, you
can email me at Thanks. MM

moderated group (moderates existing group)

Newsgroups line: Forum for group facilitation professionals.

Votes must be received by 23:59:59 UTC, 18 Dec 1995.

This vote is being conducted by a neutral third party. Questions
about the proposed group should be directed to the proponent.

Proponent: Mary Margaret Palmer <>
Votetaker: Steve Bonine <>

The newsgroup (unmoderated) is currently
an active, well-received forum for professional facilitators.
However, the amount of commercial noise posted to this group is
having a significant negative impact. Many subscribers out of
frustration have stopped participating in the group. No other
Usenet groups provide a forum for facilitation professionals and
the group's members want very much for the group to continue and
to flourish. Yet the number of commercial posts are severely
hampering its effectiveness. An informal polling of the group's
members showed unanimous support for a moderated group. The
RFD was put forth in response to that poll.

Note: If this newsgroup proposal does not pass, the existing group will not be
removed; it will simply remain the same and not be moderated.

This moderated forum will focus chiefly on the practical aspects
of facilitation although theoretical issues will not be excluded.
Participants will share ideas and advice on situations, methods,
and resources and pass on illustrations of exercises, models,
metaphors, and war stories.

This newsgroup will be open to, but not limited to, those whose
expertise and/or interests includes

_ Professional workshop, seminar, and meeting facilitation
_ Moderation, mediation, and conflict resolution
- Workshop design
- Session or conference leadership
- Large group facilitation
- OD consulting
- Facilitated learning
- Electronic meeting systems
- Strategic planning
- TQM and CQI consulting
- Team building
- Group process initiatives
- Community-based planning

This group will focus on facilitation rather than training issues.
Training is defined here as having an emphasis on the transfer of
information (course content) from a trainer to a group and training
issues are those topics which relate to the delivery or organization
of that content. This should not be taken to mean that trainers are
not welcome. However, lists, e.g. TRDEV-L already cater extremely well
to trainers and training issues.

m.b.f-moderated will replace m.b.f-unmoderated where advertising and the
promotion of products or services will not be permitted. Recommendations
of products and services of interest to facilitators may be made by
those without a vested interest.

Submissions cross-posted to other groups, which is strongly discouraged
by Usenet, will generally not be accepted unless they are approved FAQs,
RFDs, and CFVs.

The group will be gatewayed to:

List name
Moderator Sandor P. Schuman

Please note that the list will not be available until after the newsgroup
has passed and been set up.

THIS IS NOT A SECRET VOTE. Names, addresses, and votes will be published in
a RESULTS article in the same newsgroups in which this CFV appears.

The purpose of a Usenet vote is to determine the genuine interest of persons
with Usenet access in creating a new group. Soliciting votes from disinterested
parties defeats this purpose. Please do not distribute this CFV. If you must,
direct people to the official CFV as posted to news.announce.newgroups.
Distributing pre-marked or edited copies of this CFV is vote fraud. When in
doubt, ask the votetaker.

Standard Guidelines for voting apply. One person, one vote. Votes must be
mailed directly from the voter to the votetaker. Anonymous, forwarded or proxy
votes are not valid. Votes mailed by WWW servers are considered to be
anonymous votes.
