The Scott Glenn book, Raising Self-Reliant Children in a Self-Indulgent
World (1989 Prima Books), provides a set of barriers to building trust and
undermine self-confidence in young adults. Each barrier can be replaced
by a builder. The following chart will demonstrate the barrier and its
associated builder:

Barrier Builder

Assuming Checking
Rescuing or Explaining Exploring
Directing Encouraging/Inviting
Expecting Celebrating
Adultisms Respect

Each of us uses the language of barriers in our every day conversations.
The outcome of our interaction is predictable IF we see how we affect
others. This requires work. Consciously replacing barrier language with
building language strengthens trust {and the relationship} and builds
dialogue. Opening these doors brings understanding and heads off
potential conflict. I will try to expand on these individually.
