To Dave Birren regarding An Approach to Change
Dave:
The first thing that comes to mind in your posting about how people prefer
to be recognized for their skills and experience is the concept of
cross-functional teams. There are hundreds and thousands of examples
around the country of how organizations break out of department boundaries
in problem solving and improvement projects.
No doubt you're very aware of this, but I just wanted to be sure you
hadn't overlooked the connection. Using a team charter, for instance, a
core team of six people from various points in the company, representing
various pieces of the company culture, bring insight and synthesis to
problem solving and improvement work which honors them all and generates
true learning in the organization.
It's so simple a process, but so difficult a point to establish within a
traditional North American business culture where it had not existed
before.
