Steen asks about ways to characterize technology to communicate tech issues
with non-technical managers.

Two thoughts:

In the late seventies/early eighties, many corporations spent a lot of time
doing this during their "office automation" efforts (back then it was word
processing and intelligent copiers, photocomposition systems, dbms, etc.).
One author of that era is Jim Bair, one of the co-authors of THE OFFICE OF
THE FUTURE, published by North-Holland. Lots of references.

Another thought is that you might try chacterizing technology according to
the TIME and PLACE of its use. Thistaxonomy is fleshed out in a book we all
co-authored with Bob Johansen, at the Institute for the Future. It's LEADING
BUSINESS TEAMS, published by Addison-Wesley as part of the OD Series. The
book is about "groupware" (tools to help teams work together more
effectively).
