- 1. among the ancient Jews, every seventh year, in
which, according to Mosaic law, the land and vineyards
were to remain fallow and debtors were to be released
- 2. a year or half year of absence for study, rest,
or travel, given at intervals, originally every seven
years, to teachers, in some colleges and universities.
