to prove by one's own written testimony

January 17, 1997

write: 5. To make known by writing; to record; to prove by one's own written testimony; -- often used reflexively. -- yet another dictionary -- the same one as yesterday

I have today off.

The kids are at Disney world with Daddy (Kevin) and Grandma (La Madre). I have the day off. What to do with myself? That is the question. Whether 'tis nobler to suffer working an extra shift at the cat shelter or to make and keep an artist date with myself knowing full well it is pointless to write an online journal if what is expected is a postmodern novel that is "brutal, frank, not shy, real, humorous, evil, searching for truth, rife with pop culture and assemblage and collage, mixing and sampling its rhythms"?

Why write?

To make known by writing? Knowest thou this: the kids are at Disney world and I have the day off.

To record? I hereby record that on Friday, January 17, 1997 the kids are at Disney World and I have the day off.

To prove by one's own written testimony? That's tricky. I can write anything here and all I can prove about it is nothing. I could even have a live webcam at Disney World and that would not prove anyone I know is there. Once in a math class in college I convincingly proved that 0=1. Later, I invented a hitherto unknown proof of some calculus theorem. It held up to scrutiny by the math department faculty as something wholly new... I wonder if I still have those notes around anywhere? So what is proof?

To Prove it Rained

It rained yesterday. How can you prove that today? You can look up yesterday's weather in the newspaper but all that proves is that someone reported that it rained yesterday. You can check the rain gauge outside your door if you live around here and have a rain gauge, but suppose I sneaked over to your house and poured Evian water in your rain gauge? What would that prove?

How do you even know I wrote this today and not yesterday or last week?

Janet Egan

Do I exist? I did an alta vista search on my name yesterday and got 41 hits. The 41st was my home page. The others were mostly references to Writing a UNIX Device Driver in various book catalogs. However, 6 were references to some wholly other Janet Egans:

Janet Egan, Faculty of Education

University of Sydney, Australia

3

Janet Egan , AUDITOR

Farrandsville, PA 17734

1

Janet Egan a.k.a "juanita the scene queen"

Boston's WFNX radio

2

My homepage of "normative identity formation" is dead last. At least it was there. I spent a whole afternoon listing my site with search engines (earlier this week). I have changed the title to "Janet Egan's Home Page" instead of "Janet's Home Page" to remedy that. Haven't done the search again to check.

Do you suppose anyone who listens to "juanita the scene queen" thinks it's me?
