I uploaded the entries I had been working on when the computer bit the dust and tried to write a clever catch-up entry for yesterday but I just ran out of steam. I debated whether I should just skip all the incomplete entries or at least let people read what little I wrote. Maybe I'll go back and fill them in later. With absolutely nothing on my calendar for today (except my WA meeting) one might think I'd get a lot done, but one would be wrong. I slept late. News flash: I sleep late just about every day lately. I had coffee. I read a couple of chapters of Haruki Murakami's The Windup Bird Chronicles, which I had started back in December and just recently picked up again. I really like the way Murakami slides back and forth between the real and surreal so matter-of-factly. People pass through walls into totally other places and it all seems perfectly reasonable and yet horrifyingly weird. It's refreshing to be into a weird novel after all the non-fiction books I've been immersed in on the general theme of coastal studies. I spent the rest of the afternoon fiddling with my computer trying to figure out how to use Photoshop with less memory. I can do what I need to do as long as I am scrupulous about closing windows and exiting from applications. This is a pain. I don't know why I didn't just order a new 32MB chip when I ordered the Sony to Mac monitor adapter, which by the way finally came yesterday despite my having ordered it by overnight delivery on Monday. Remind me to take the adapter off the next time I bring (take?) my computer anywhere for service. I guess you never know when they're gonna lose a little adapter. Probably never occurred to them that I might need it. Most of the Photoshop fooling around, once I got the hang of working with such little memory, involved trying to replace the ugly black/reddish background of one of the slides of Abies marocana. It looks so easy in the documentation, but no matter how I feathered and expanded and contracted the Magic Wand selection I still ended up with huge areas of background selected between cones and too many needles not selected. Obviously, I need more experience. |
