Staying three feet away from Emily is starting to seem like the epic of Gilgamesh - the part where Gilgamesh journeys to the underworld in search of his friend Enkidu. Nancy has started calling Emily Enkidu. After 15 years of sleeping on the same pillow as Nancy, Emily is unwilling to sleep in another room even though Nancy has provided food and litter there. The temporary door between the rooms has become an invitation to scratch and meow at night, keeping Nancy awake. After a week of this, Nancy is pretty tired. When I told my walking buddies during our walk yesterday that I was treating Nancy to a hotel room to sleep, they laughed. "You're going to a hotel just to sleep?" "Yup." It turned out to be fun though. We got a room at the Days Hotel at India Point overlooking the harbor. We had a great view of the lights reflecting off the water at night and a wonderful view of people launching boats and fishing this morning. It felt like being on vacation and we were only a few blocks from Nancy's apartment. I entertained Nancy by reading aloud from the tourist literature all the things to see and do and eat in Providence. There was even a section on night life that made a sleazy gentlemen's club seem like a cosmopolitan place to be for the visiting businessman. The article about the wonders of downtown led off with a picture of the gondola on the Woonasquatucket River. That's got to be the first time an article about the renaissance of downtown Providence has led off with the gondola instead of Buddy Cianci's smiling face. The photo of Marco poling the gondola in the sunset made Providence look like Venice. They did make one little mistake though. The gondola people like to call all the gondoliers Marco, but the article mentioned one named John. Oops. |
