I picked up the latest batch of photos on Saturday after walking, on the way down to Nancy's. So, here at last is the Harris' sparrow:

And while I was messing with the scanner today, I figured I'd finally put up some of the pics of Pumpkin Fire.

Saturday:

Lots of time in the coffee shop catching up with various people: Sue O. on Friday, QI and Richard on Saturday, followed by Tom on Saturday. Then off to walk with the walking buddies at Priscilla's house. Allegedly the whole group was going to be together for the first time in ages, but Rita called just before I left the house to tell me she had a bad headache and didn't feel up to it. I called Priscilla's house to make sure they'd wait for me since I was running late. She said not to worry, that Joan-east wasn't there yet. Well, when I got there still no Joan. Priscilla and I watched part of the BC football game while Claire listened to Harold tell the story of living through Typhoon Olive on the slopes of Mt. Fuji with a troop of Boy Scouts. I'm not sure how long ago that was, but I've heard Harold tell the story a lot. Still no Joan. Priscilla calls her house and got her daughter who said she hadn't come home from the craft fair yet. Finally, the three of us took an abbreviated walk around the neighborhood. Apparently Lawrence has got new water towers. Some people stil have their Halloween decorations up. Never did get to see Joan.

Nancy and I went out to dinner at the Garden Grille, my favorite vegetarian restaurant, browsed at College Hill Bookstore, then flopped on the futon and read aloud to each other from The New Yorker and Grandchildren of Alcoholics.

Sunday:

Breakfast at Andrea's (the Greek restaurant on Thayer St. not my niece Andrea's house :-)). Walk on the East Bay Bike Path. Watched buffleheads but did not give into my insane plan to time their dives to compare to hooded mergansers. Drove to Barrington so Nancy could buy a new purse at Cherry Webb. I browsed at Little Professor bookstore and drank coffee at the local Starbucks while she did this. Also bought film at CVS while Nancy was shopping. I think I might have scratched the lens when I was trying to blow the dust out of the camera while loading it. I haven't looked at it since, and took only a few pictures later in the day at Blithewold. Watching the sunset over the bay from Blithewold is spectacular. My favorite tree, the dawn redwood, looks spectacular in the last flash of golden afternoon light especially with its needles autumn brown. Once it got dark we visited the gift shop so I could get some tree-themed Xmas cards. We had a fun browse while the staff was busily stocking the shelves for the Xmas rush. I found the perfect cards.

Today:

Drank coffee, read several chapters of Song for the Blue Ocean, balanced my checkbook, made some phone calls for Purrfect Companions, tried to compress my Elder Forum article to 10 lines, started an excavation of my desk, scanned in the Pumpkin Fire photos as mentioned above, pickedup the laundry, watched the news, continued cleaning the desk...

The thing about the desk is that it doesn't look messy because I make very neat piles with square corners. I lose things in neat piles with square corners. Things slide under other things. Bills slide under magazines. Wish I'd known that article could only be 10 lines. Look here's a letter from a friend I should have answered in June - oops! Oh, there's those Kodak Medalist coupons - been looking for them for a week. And what is this drawing of an elephant in a snowstorm doing here? Lizzy drew that for me three years ago! And this teensy Penguin 60's Classics edition of The Confessions of St. Augustine! How did they compress it into 84 pocket-sized pages? Desk mining is very rich today.
