Nancy called me this morning to tell me the Moby Dick marathon is being held again this year on January 3. She asked me to tell Tom & Julie about it too as they missed out on it last year and were really interested in reading this year.

After Joan-west and I finished breakfast, we went off to downtown Andover to get cash at the ATM, stamps at the post office, and coffee at Starbucks. I grabbed the envelopes with the pictures for Paul and Tom . As we were cruising looking for a parking space, I spotted Tom crossing the street and blurted out to him that moments before Nancy had asked me to call him about the Moby Dick thing. Turns out he and Julie will be in California then, so they can't go. I handed Tom his envelope and continued on looking for a parking space. Somebody pulled out. I pulled in.

The ATM was out of money so we had to go to another one.

The post office was not out of stamps, however. So Joan mailed her stuff and I mailed the pictures to Paul.

Finally Starbucks. As we're sitting down to our coffee, Tom appears and joins us. It was kinda fun.

Cafe Browse & Beans was disappointing so we didn't eat lunch.

Visits to a few landmarks in our lives: MASSCOMP's former corporate headquarters, Kimball Farms for ice cream.

The former MASSCOMP building has been added onto and has an additional loading dock. The softball field is gone. The hawks are still circling over the gravel pit, same as they ever were. The street has been renamed Robbins Road. What happened to Technology Way?

Kimball's was out of ice cream. Furthermore, it's turned into a kitschy New England theme park - a parody of itself. How can an ice cream place be out of ice cream? I backed into a snow bank on the way out of the parking lot. The muffler is loose again. Didn't I just do this backing out of my parking spot at home? It's not dragging on the ground so I'll fix it later.

A short walk at Groton Place. Time to meet the nieces. I introduce Joan to the kids as the person of the cat in my sleeping bag in the vacation pictures. Kids inform me I have to pick up the guinea pigs at the G's house. The school tried to call me but I was busy trying to get ice cream at Kimball's with Joan. Piano lessons at Mrs. Reed World. Joan falls asleep at Reed World. Andrea claims she's pretending. Lizzy learns some Xmas tunes. Off to G's to get the guinea pigs: Petunia and Sweet Pea. The late Ruffles died of eating pale green lettuce so Lizzy tells me. This time the school has provided a blankie so the gp's won't freeze.

As we're carrying the gp's up the stairs to Lizzy's room, the upstairs hall light burns out. I make sure the gp's are securely shut in Lizzy's bedroom and Jellybean is securely shut out.

I am just writing a note to Kevin:

Dear Kevin:

You have guinea pigs.

The upstairs hall light burned out

Love,

Janet

Kevin arrives before I sign the "Love, Janet" part. Off to deliver Joan-west to another friend who will take her to the airport. None of this seems like enough time. It's all very weird. On one hand I feel like it's no big deal, I'll see her in a few days or something. After all, even though she'll be across the Atlantic, she'll be less isolated in Pomaia than she was at Vajrapani - we'll actually have e-mail as she'll have electricity in her room and won't have to keep her computer 7 miles away. On the other hand, she's moving to Italy for 7 years!

I'm lousy at goodbyes and this doesn't really seem like one anyway. Better look up how many frequent flier miles I need for a ticket to Tuscany.
