title

Actually, this entry has nothing to do with a million darkened kitchens, or a thousand mill lofts gray, or bread and roses, but it's a catchy title.

more reasons

How could I have left Lyme disease and eastern equine encephalitis off of my list of reasons it is insane to live in Massachusetts? EEE is more of a problem in Rhode Island and southeastern Mass. but that still counts as a Massachusetts plague. And I didn't mean to imply in yesterday's entry that I like country music. The lack of a country music station was an actual reason for not relocating given to me by somebody I interviewed back in the dim mists of time when I had a career. Nobody ever cited the price of avocados, but I know some of my California friends who are used to getting 5 for $1.00 at a roadside stand would not be able to survive paying $2.39 for one!

OK, so why am I so down on Massachusetts? Actually, I'm not. I kinda like it here. I just feel defensive about liking it. Like I'm unhip or uncool and hopelessly out of touch with reality ... OK so you don't have EEE in California - do you even have mosquitoes? Never mind. My earliest memory of California is the dry brown hills around my aunt's house in Pittsburg (near Antioch). The drab brown mass of Mount Diablo towered over us like a parched landscape of hell. I never saw anything green in California until a winter trip to Big Sur when I was well into adulthood. Even now, the word California conjures up. Diablo in all its golden brown dryness.

California

So, what do I like about California? Big Sur. Orr Hot Springs. City Lights. The all garlic restaurant near City Lights (Stinking Rose?). The beaches up north. The beaches between LaJolla and Big Sur. The birds at the Salton Sea (but not the sea itself). The flowers at Anza-Borrego. My friends. The chai in Santa Cruz (I don't know why it's different there, but it is). Sea otters. The Monterey Bay Aquarium. Nepenthe. Blueblossom trees in bloom in spring. California poppies.

There's probably more stuff I like about California. In fact I'm sure there is, but I sort of lost my train of thought.

cats from yesterday

I also realized I didn't write a word about cats yesterday and we had a whole bunch of adoptions including the snot kittens, Pumpkin, Michael, Kibby!, and the chandelier cats! - presumably to a home without chandeliers. Every time someone told their story, the value of the chandelier they were hanging from increased. Last I heard it was a $10,000 chandelier. We didn't tell the adopters they can open refrigerator doors. We'll let them figure that out for themselves. Besides, it's probably something specific about the shelter's fridge that makes it easy for cats to open.

Kitty let herself out of her cage and hid. We searched high and low for her all morning. She finally showed herself just as Roberta was working up to total panic. Quincy got me on the arm, also got one of the board members who happened by. Wish she wouldn't do that.

All F's girl is back in school so we didn't have to spend any time figuring out how to get her to do useful work. As Eileen put it: to get her to wash dishes you had to say wash this dish, now wash this dish, etc. until they were done. Heckuva lot easier just to do 'em myself.

the pelican

Roberta denies having kidnapped the pelican. She did however call the refuge law enforcement officer and make the offer to drive it to Florida. I told her I was picturing her in a motel room somewhere in Delaware with the pelican in bed. She got a kick out of it, thank goodness.
