why bother? The web sucks. Computers suck. Just had to get that out of my system. I spent hours and hours and hours on a very long, well-researched entry for Monday. I was so tired, I didn't finish it until today. Then I tried to upload it to world. Something loaded alright. The header. Period. I tried transferring it over again and again and reloading again and again. Still the same. I previewed it again and again on my Mac and it looked fine. I went over the html with a fine toothed comb and found nothing I could spot with my tired eyes. I tried one more time and the little running dog icon for Fetch just ran and ran and ran and ran and ran and ran until I couldn't stand it anymore and hit command-dot to stop it. I closed every window, quit every application, and tried to connect with Telnet just to delete the old file and maybe see if there was something obviously wrong on the receiving end. Telnet went into a strange never never land where it insisted it was connected but wouldn't give me a window or emulate any terminal known to mankind or do anything on its little menu. I quit that application too and hung up. So some day you may get an entry for yesterday and you may get this entry for today ... or not.... Oh , and one other thing, I noticed when Fetch displayed the file list all the files I uploaded today had creation dates of tomorrow. I looked at my calendar to find out where the day went. I am very very very very confused. According to my Mac, my pocket calendar, Day Timer 2.0, and Nancy today is Tuesday, July 8, 1997. So why does world.std.com think it is July 9? We haven't hit the year 2000 when all the date algorithms in the world are supposed to self-destruct have we? Today's entry was going to be a reasoned and well-researched one about work addiction. But why bother? I'm clearly in some kind of workaholic brown-out where I've missed all of Tuesday and today really is Wednesday - or worse. I don't remember the entire year of 1985... has Tuesday gone there too? What is Dunkin' Donuts putting n those Coffee Coolatas, anyway? |
way later that same nightOnce I could connect to the world again, I discovered that yesterday's entry kept getting truncated when I transferred it. From this I deduced that it was too long. Therefore, I made the day's entry a list of hypertext links to various files dealing with various parts of what I wrote. I am way too tired to make all the "previous" and "next" stuff work - so use the back button on your browser. It's been lovely, but I have to scream now. |
