Woodstock, Connecticut Airport

Early in 2003, Tom Peghiny gave me a call and said, "Ed, you've gotta see this airport out in Woodstock, CT".

He gave me a little info on the owner and operator, Rudy Tomasik.

Rudy is one of the neatest guys I've ever met.

He's 78 years old, spry as a spring chicken, jumps up and down when you say something that excites him, and is a Silver Star recipient from World War II.
Rudy entered the European Theatre, as a Forward Intelligence Observer, in January 1945, where he particpated in the final stages of the "Battle of the Bulge" in Belguim. From that day on, he was in continuous action until two weeks after the May 8th cease fire.
He had a really interesting day on April 13, 1945. First, he was awarded a Silver Star for his role in a fire-fight near Weimar, Germany. Later in the day, he was part of the force that liberated the NAZI concentration camp called Buchenwald. Folks, this is a very uncommon person.

After the war, Rudy worked as a stock-broker for a while. But, the lure of airplanes eventually got to him. In 1952, he purchased the airport at Woodstock and has operated it every since. He has an Airframe and Powerplant rating and does annuals, and more, for pilots all over New England.

What's more than that, Rudy is just a plain hoot to be around.

Tom Peghiny says, "Rudy's the real deal". I couldn't agree more.

And his airport location ... the pictures speak for themselves. If you're ever in NorthEast Connecticut, set your GPS for 41.922N and 71.956W (41.55'.20" - 71.57'.20") and drop in for a visit.

Joanne snapped this view of the Woodstock countryside while I was on a left downwind for runway 01.

The right seat view of the countryside on left base for 01.

Final approach for 01.

Here's some of Rudy's buildings. He has a very eclectic collection of tools and vehicles

If you're a gear-head at heart, ya gotta see it.

The snackbar at Rudy's is something to see. It's like a page out of the 50's, complete with soda fountain and stools.

Here's Rudy, after being assisted aboard by my lovely and gracious Flight Attendant (Joanne), about to take his first ride in a FlightStar.

Rudy, in one of his rare moments where both his feet are on the ground, telling me about the airport history.

Airport bums telling whoppers.

Here is a shot of the Thompson Speedway.

Thompson is a one-mile stock car oval that Joanne and I have been to many times.

Ahhh, there's nothing like a window down flight on a nice day.

This photo has sort of a 'film noir' effect, aye.
