22-July-99 Columbia River Gorge

. .
.
I guess I should have backtracked down US 30 all the way to the interstate, but I got off for bypass 30 and we spent a couple of miles going through the seedy north side of Portland. It wasn't a problem, but the place we stopped for gas didn't take credit cards (!) and the Bank of America ATM didn't like my Bank Boston ATM card.

After ten miles back on I-84 we saw a sign for tourist information and pulled off, hoping to find restrooms. We were in Troutdale, which turned out to be the gateway to the Columbia River gorge. It was another stroke of dumb luck. The maps show I-84 to be scenic in that area, but the woman at the info stop convinced us that the really scenic part was the old US 30 up on the top of the gorge, not the interstate at the bottom. Holy smokes and no fooling. We followed her instructions to the letter, crossing into Washington on the Bridge of the Gods and back to Oregon at Hood River and staying on top of the cliffs at Rowena Crest.
