27-Mar-99 Watch and watching

. .
.
My new cheapo watch was useless. The display was unreadable in the morning. I don't believe the battery just happened to run out six hours after I bought it; I must have gotten it into some mode that made it use power profligately. I didn't want a watch that would let me do that, so back I went to Ames, and then across Watertown to Bradlee's and finally to Anne and Hope. I now have a real Casio again.

In the evening, completely uncharacteristically, we watched Ed Wood on Sundance and Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion on Starz. I guess the point of Ed Wood is that you can't have quality without being critical. Ed was portrayed as a really likeable guy, but unable to say that anything was less than fine or perfect. He just wanted to make films, not to stretch himself or his actors to make better films. I guess he succeeded at what he set out to do. My favorite line from Romy and Michelle was, “In my dream I knew the formula for glue.” Of course the movie was all fluff and you knew the whole point was going to be a “just be yourself” thing, but the big smile on Jeanane Garofolo as her character realized that she had made someone else miserable in high school was enough in itself.
