An Anglo-American poet, (born in St. Louis, Missouri, September 26, 1888 but naturalized as a British subject) Thomas Stearns Eliot was also a critic, dramatist, and editor. In 1948 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. Eliot was also awarded the British Order of Merit in 1948 and the American Medal of Freedom in 1964. He died in London on January 4, 1965.
