How frames and windows are used

The framed portion of this web site uses four different frames in the main window and, when needed, one additional window.

In the main window the POEM frame is used to display the poem. The POEM frame can always be found in the upper left of the window. A small help and navigation menu always appears in the HELP frame located in the lower left of the window. Both these frames will always display the same page.

To the right of the HELP frame is the DEFINTIONS frame. This frame is most often used to display definitions or explanations of hyperlinked words or phrases appearing in the POEM frame but it may also be used to display small text files when displaying them in the NOTES frame would be inconvenient. At other times you have a a choice of whether to display a file in the DEFINTIONS frame or NOTES frame. For example, you might choose to display the original Italian of a Dante canto in the DEFINTIONS frame and compare that text to an English translation displayed in the NOTES frame.

Depending on what display option you chose when you entered the framed portion of this web site the NOTES frame will appear in various places in the window. Of the two recommended displays, if you chose the display for large monitors then it will appear to the right of the other three frames. If you chose a display for smaller monitors then it will appear underneath the POEM frame but above the other two frames (it appears elsewhere in the other display options.) The NOTES frame is used to diplay most of the web site's files. Eliot's notes, commentary, allusion explanations, the text of poems, plays and novels all almost always displayed here.

The additional window is called the AUXILARY window and it will appear the first time that you want to visit a web page or site at a different site. The same window will be used over and over so I suggest that you do not remove it once it is up. I suggest that you overlap this window and the main window so, that when the main window is on top, a portion of the leftmost part of the AUXILARY window appears to the left of the main window. This makes it easier to see when a change occurs in the AUXILARY window. The AUXILARY window is used so you do not end up having an ugly, cramped display of a framed site being displayed within this framed site.

As extra help in having you find the new pages when they are displayed, the background color is different for different types of pages. This means that you will often see color changes in a frame. Also, your browser may have a feature that displays tool tips when you hover over a hyperlinked word. Many links in this site have tool tips that tell you which frame the new page will be displayed in.
