Eliot spent the 1910-1911 academic year doing post-graduate studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. In the summer of 1911 he visited northern Italy and also Munich. While in Munich he completed The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.
In The Waste Land Eliot mentions the Hofgarten, a park in Munich, and the Starnbergersee, a nearby lake (as is the Königssee, mentioned in his draft of the poem.)
