Regular Teams
American League, 1900
Note, 2002-10-22. This is one year old. Last month, I entered
the rosters published by S.C. Thompson (1967) and David Nemec (1997)
in an electronic database and resolved some matters in consultation
with David. That work is not reflected here.
After the 1894 season, Cincinnati player-manager Charles Comiskey retired
from major league baseball (the National League), acquired the Sioux Falls
ballclub in the Western League and moved it to Saint Paul. Cincinnati
sportswriter Ban Johnson was hired as WL President. After the 1899 season,
when the NL contracted from twelve ballclubs to eight, the WL renamed itself
the American League and moved the Saint Paul and Grand Rapids franchises to
Chicago and Cleveland for the 1900 season.
According to two counts of AL1900 players, 102 of 200 had previous NL
experience (Art Ahrens 1977); 126 of 201 played in the NL before or during
1900 (Joe Wayman 1999). I don't know whether the redefinition accounts for
the numerical difference or whether Wayman's is also a significant recount.
Here are three pitchers and eight regular players for each team,
identified by Wayman, and the complete roster of the champion Chicago
White Stockings with auxiliary information provided by Ahrens. The
three pitchers and the three regular outfielders on each team are
listed alphabetically by lastname.

Ahrens reports that 4 of 28 White Stockings (14%) had no
National League experience; compare 98 of 200 players on all
AL1900 teams (49%). Wayman reports that 75 of 201 players
had no NL experience including 1900 (37%).
MLB All Stars in AL1900
David Shiner recently identified a "team" of players from
AL1900 by the criterion of major-league playing time
[TNP 2001].
Pitchers: the six AL1900 pitchers who pitched at least
1500 innings in the major leagues.
best MLB season (Shiner)
P Ehret Red 1890
Foreman Frank 1888
Hart Bill 1886
Patten Casey 1906
Sparks Tully 1907
Waddell Rube 1905
Three were old and over the hill in 1900; three were young
and unproven. Shiner believes that Sparks would have been
the only regular in the 8-team National League.
Regulars: the AL1900 players with most seasons as a regular
in the majors; two played a different position in 1900.
seasons as MLB regular
C Schreckengost Ossee 1899-1908
1B LaChance "Candy" 1894-1904
2B Bierbauer Lou 1886-1895
SS Smith "Germany" 1884-1897
3B Conroy Wid 1901-1911 (shortstop in 1900)
OF Anderson John 1895-1908 (firstbase in 1900)
OF Brodie Steve 1890-1902
OF Hoy William "Dummy" 1888-1902
Anderson was at peak age in 1900 and LaChance was also in
the midst of his career as a regular player.
Acknowledgments. Arthur R. Ahrens, "The Chicago White Stockings of
1900", BRJ 1978, p87-92, is aptly titled. Joseph M. Wayman, "Major
League Status for the AL", BRJ 1999, p74-76, lists 64 regular players
and 24 regular pitchers for the 8-team league with terse notes on the major
league careers of each and some summary statistics for the 201 players, 88
regulars. David Shiner, "Another Look", TNP 2001, p28-31, argues
against Wayman that the AL1900 players with significant major league careers
were generally unproven or over the hill in 1900.
