Who's in Center?

The outfield. Is it one position, two (center and corner), or three (left, center, and right)? Opinions differ.

"Who's in Center?" is a collection of articles based on two presumptions. First, centerfield is distinct, so the outfield is at least two positions. Whether left and right are distinct doesn't matter here. Second, the outfield is commonly treated as one, so many people who know much about MLB players of the last 130 years have little or no picture of who played centerfield regularly for how long. There is work to be done. Let the learning begin.

Three articles are now available to the public.

  • Long Careers beginning before 1920: at least 9 MLB seasons as a regular Centerfielder
  • Overview of who's in center for each NL team of the Deadball Era
  • Overview of who's in center for each AL team of the Deadball Era

Acknowledgements. The overviews are based on the series of regular centerfielders, one for each team and season, identified by Total Baseball, 6th ed, 1999. Other references that identify regular players by position, such as MacMillan and Neft & Cohen, differ from TB6 in a few cases.
