Baseballist Gravesites in New England
Find-a-Grave is a marvelous
repository of information on gravesites with two databases, one for the
famous and one for the not-famous (for finding or honoring friends and
relatives). Its "famous" database has some entry for almost
everyone listed here: personal name, vital dates, cemetery name, and
often a blurb. Each "blurb and photo" linked here is a more complete
entry at Find-a-Grave, always including some biographical blurb and
gravesite photo and usually including a gravesite address. Find-a-grave
solicits contributions and grows rapidly. I will be grateful for
notices of any baseballists newly listed there.
Stew Thornley [Minneapolis MN] maintains a directory of
Baseball Hall of Fame gravesites with more complete cemetery and
gravesite locations than Find-a-Grave provides, but without blurbs or
photos and limited to Hall of Fame members. Stew has now visited all
182 sites; ten deceased HOFers are not interred. Of course, his work is
"all done" only temporarily.
One bright day, Summer 2001, Stew and I visited the six HOFers buried in
Boston, Brookline, and Cambridge: by debut date,
George Wright,
Mike "King" Kelly,
Tim Keefe,
John Clarkson,
Tommy McCarthy, and
Hugh Duffy.
Someday, some of our photos will appear here and some at Find-a-Grave.
Of the six "locals", only Duffy was still active at the turn of the 20th
century, and he was barely active, the 34-year-old player-manager of the
first Milwaukee Brewers in their only major league season.
Scope. This list includes every baseballist buried in the six
states whose entry I noticed at Find-a-Grave, 21 May 2001, plus Mike
"King" Kelly who was unlisted there, plus a few others. It thereby
includes every Hall of Fame member buried in New England. Please send information about any
baseballist gravesite that should be listed here, in your opinion. (I
can accept some photos, too.)
Unmarked graves. Since the dedication of a marker for Roger
Connor in Waterbury CT, 30 June 2001, every Hall of Famer who is buried
in New England lies in a marked grave. The gravesites of Connor, Billy
Hamilton (HOF) and Duffy Lewis (not HOF) were marked only in the last
few years, thanks to local volunteers and donors.
No burial. Tom Yawkey, owner of the Boston Red Sox for four
decades, was cremated and his ashes were distributed. He is one of ten
deceased HOFers who are not interred.
If you visit, be forewarned that a "gravesite address" may
support a frustrating search. Roads are unmarked, rows are unnumbered.
To visit with some security of finding, contact the cemetery in advance
and acquire detailed instructions or a map.
