    "The Hurrah Game": Museum Exhibit (past) and Book

    The Hurrah Game: Baseball in Northampton, 1823-1953.

    Two SABR members in Northampton, Massachusetts, Brian Turner and John Bowman, recently curated "The Hurrah Game", an exhibit at Historic Northampton, the museum of their local Historical Society, on display May to August 2002. The exhibit told the story of baseball in their town and its immediate area from the early 1800s to the 1950s and it was notable especially for the material on the game and its players in the 19th century.

    In the course of their research, Turner and Bowman turned up some fascinating memorabilia --a belt worn by a local team in 1866-1867, a bat from the 1890s-- along with all manner of textual, photographic and graphic materials, some of local interest but some with ties to the broader history of the game. Perhaps the most extraordinary discovery was that a local team --fully organized and uniformed-- had an African-American starting player in 1865. That may be the first such case in the history of the game.

    The Book

    Along with the exhibit, Turner and Bowman produced a catalogue that includes all the materials and texts displayed and much more for which there was not space. They feel that there is enough in this catalogue to reward all those who have an interest in the history of baseball in the 19th century, as well as baseball in the middle Connecticut River valley. It is a handsome volume, softcover, 98p with 190+ illustrations, boxscores, etc.
