American Association History Project
19th Century Committee, SABR
The AA History project was established in 1993 and progressed rapidly
for a few years, then slowly through 2003. Jon Dunkle resigned as director
in Spring 2004, and did not provide a report for 2003-2004. The project is
under review by five volunteers, beginning Winter 2005. "We must assess the
AA History data gathered to date, face the problem of covering the remaining
team seasons, and think about later phases of the project." --Paul Wendt,

Happy new year to you all!
I am writing to tell you more about the Nineteenth Century Committee's
American Association Project and ask for your help as we try to complete
the research portion of the project.
The AA Project is an endeavor by our committee to create a history of
the American Association based on the local newspaper accounts that
covered the teams of that league. Researchers are going through
microfilm of the newspapers and taking notes concerning points of
interest. These notes will then be compiled, edited, and turned into a
narrative history of the league.
This project has been going on for some time but it is nearing
completion. There are a number of team seasons available for those who
wish to assist in this project. Many of these papers are available via
interlibrary loan so nearness geographically to a team is not as
important as the willingness to take part in a SABR project.
Here are the 17 team-seasons that need coverage:
2003-06-24 update by Jon Dunkle
Brooklyn 1885, 1887
Kansas City 1888-1889
Philadelphia 1882-1888
Pittsburgh 1883-1886
St. Louis 1891
Syracuse 1890
end update
We are not looking for someone to volunteer to cover all the seasons for
a team. A single season is encouraged, to learn how much time is involved
and whether you get enough enjoyment out of it. Then you can go on from
there. We have half a dozen researchers actively working on the project
now and would like to add you to the roster.
Drop me a line if you are interested or have questions.
