CENTURY COMMITTEE
Newsletter Archive
to #2004.1
A complete set of 19c Cmte newsletters to #2004.1 follows this two-page guide to contents and two historic letters.
The Nineteenth Century Committee of SABR (19c Cmte) was established early in 1983, about six months after John Thorn and Mark Rucker distributed a letter of invitation to some likely members, including a request to pass it on. Following approval by the SABR Board, the co-Chairs sent a welcome letter with a survey enclosed. The invitation and welcome (without the survey) are included in this edition of the archive; they may be considered newsletters zero and one. Subsequent letters from the Chair(s) were mainly concerned with the 19c Stars project, which yielded a collection of 136 one-page biographies, Nineteenth Century Stars (SABR, 1989). None of that correspondence is included here. I have covered the survey results in the 20th anniversary article ("1983" #2003) and I will summarize or reprint a few other early items elsewhere.
Bob Tiemann issued the first official newsletter in 1987, weeks after he accepted the Chair. Frederick Ivor-Campbell succeeded Tiemann as editor and joined him as co-Chair in 1991. At the same time, Ivor-Campbell conferred a name that is still in use, Nineteenth Century Notes. John Husman accepted the Chair in 1998 but Ivor-Campbell continued as newsletter editor thru 1999. Greg Rhodes edited one number in 2001 and I have edited two since succeeding Husman as Chair in 2002.
This edition is complete except for membership lists and survey forms that were included as the final pages of some newsletter. In effect, I have treated those as separate items mailed with a newsletter, as some lists and forms were. Each item is photocopied from a contemporary photocopy, which explains some instances of poor quality. The two historic letters are "reprinted" on the 19c Cmte website in good quality (visit http://sabr.org; select "Research"). Each newsletter begins on a right-hand page, so there are two blank pages here and the item lengths do not quite add up.

RECURRING
CONTENTS, 19c Notes 1991-1999
This is a classification and census of some newsletter contents that appeared recurrently in the 16 numbers edited by Frederick Ivor-Campbell, 1991-1999. It will be valuable for reference in discussion of what might be or should be resumed; please write to me and use it that way. Maybe it has other value.
