NMIS Project Final Report 1993 - 1997
Abstract
This report provides a cumulative guide to the major accomplishments of
the Networked Multimedia Information Services (NMIS) Project, which was
initiated in 1993 as a collaborative effort between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dartmouth College and Medical School, and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in cooperation with industry sponsors, IBM and Turner Broadcasting. The NMIS Project has conducted research and development on the interrelated issues involved in making a new set of critical multimedia information services widely available over the emerging National Information Infrastructure (NII). The following were the three major areas of concentration:
- Developed and delivered prototype multimedia information services for K-12 education, continuing education and the health-care community.
- Employed prototype services as a context for creating solutions for multimedia production and delivery using live, subscription, on-demand, and interactive service delivery models, while also analyzing local access technologies for high bandwidth NII services.
- Used prototype services and technology as a foundation for conducting related research on multimedia and NII standards and policy, including issues such as intellectual copyright, security, electronic commerce and interoperability.
This report also describes further challenges which emerged during the project and recommendations on how these challenges may be addressed in the future. This information will serve as a useful resource for future efforts of NMIS Project collaborators and others pursuing related efforts.
