Greg, like you, I work at an university, supervising a maintenance
/custodial department. I have struggled with compensation issues. When
people's compensation is as low as the bottom of the scale here in Idaho,
all people can think about is what they don't have, and how to get more.
So in many respects the book I going to suggest doesn't fit, and the
author posits this himself. However, it is great book to broaden one's
understanding of compenstion.

"Punished by Rewards: the trouble with gold stars, A's and other bribes"
by Artie Kohn is an excellent argument for stressing intrinsic verses
extrinsic rewards. Deming gives this book his approval on the jacket
cover. It is easy to pull ideas out for the work place since he covers
lots of ground. Kohn has another one on the down side of competition.
"No Contest." but I haven't read that one. That my 2 cents.

Warm regards from snowy north Idaho.

Tony
