When talking about 3 levels of mistakes William Hobler is, in my view
introducing the use of and importance of 'Coaching' in organisational
development. I was not at first clear as to how defining three levels of
mistake could actually help create the blame free environment. Having
read the detail I then realised that for each category he is describing an
approach to managing the risk, taking decisions and enabling the decision
maker to learn from the outcome without adversely affecting the eventual
result.
This is Coaching. It is well recognised (at least amongst the people I
hang out with) that you do not encourage children to improve their ability
at sports, music, history etc by telling them that they are 'Not good
enough!' 'Not trying hard enough' 'Failing'. So if not children, why
adults? What is it about the 'adult' business environment that makes
people think that they can get away with putting people down for making
decisions? Where have we gone wrong and how can we break the cycle?
I send my regards to all of those who are thinking outside (without) the
box.
