Linda's story about the little boy and dishes reminds me on an old "joke"
on consequences that has the same kind of logic.

Seems this gang of boys is picking on this old man and yelling and getting
in his way and all. This goes on for a few days until the man decides to
deal with it.

So, that next day, the boys approach and the man says, "I'll give you $5
if you will yell at me." So they do and he gives them the money.

The next day, the boys approach and he says, "I'll give you $3 if you will
yell at me." So they do and he gives them the money.

The next day, the boys approach and he says, "I'll give you $1 if you will
yell at me." So they do and he gives them the money.

and the next day, the boys approach and he says, "I'll give you $.50 if
you will yell at me."

At this point, they comoplain. "We're not going to do that for half a
dollar. No way." And they left.

Funny thing about expectations and consequences. methinks.
