Replying to LO11928 --

Ben's comments on the problem of a few 'lead contributors' and the many
'followers' reflects a common problem I have seen in both companies and
voluntary organizations. One of the issues seems to be fear - that is,
there are a number of the folks who could do something but are sure that
"you" are the innovative type or the leader type and that they are not as
smart/talented/out-going. One can mentor these folks once one figures out
which ones they are. But I have never quite been able to assess which
ones I can help best by small projects and steps -and which I need to drop
into the deep water. And this is tiring, time-consuming work to do and so
it is often easier for me to keep going or to do it myself.

I would be interested in other comments or ideas on this issue since I
suspect a number of the LO members are in the same traces and would like
to hitch up some other folks.
