I have followed this discussion with great interest. I know that I am one
of those who speaks much more from the head than from the heart (soul).
The subject matter of the list and the intellect of the participants
probably influence me in this direction, but I feel that the primary
reason I speak from the head is that this is what I have been taught to do
all my life.

First my parents taught me to be a good girl, to try to fit in with
others, to try to be liked and as Thumper said in Bambi: "If you can't
say something nice, don't say anything at all."

Then my teachers and professors taught me to speak and write for their
highly educated minds. I was rewarded for my expression of information,
ideas, concepts; not for expression of passion or soul. When I entered
the work place I learned to modify my writing style for my new audience.
I learned to write in clear, concise bullet points and to deal in data &
fact rather than theory.

Over the past few years I've come to an awareness that most of my life I
have functioned pretty well as a chameleon, adapting my personality, my
style, my speech to my current associates. Chameleons are interesting to
observe but theres no great joy in being one.

I have now begun a new chapter in my life which could be titled "What you
see is what you get". I'm trying to unlearn my habit of adaptation and
trying to shed all these layers of pretense that I've acquired over the
years in order to discover the real me who knows her soul and speaks from
it.
