You have no doubt detected it's a big step (a 'new world')
for a team to become completely self-directed -- responsible for
evaluation, pay and hiring/firing.

With these 'pocketbook' issues, there can be lots of emotionally
charged concerns which must be resolved by the team. It helps
to have had an ample number of trust-building experiences, and
to have an open dialog.

Perhaps your team could take a 'team approach' to the situation:
discuss the issues, voice your concerns, research some
possibilities, brainstorm, reach consensus, etc.

Your team may want to consider 360-degree surveys. Also, there is
some useful criteria to measure team performance in The Wisdom of Teams
(Katzenbach/Smith:1993).
