Turn-around on LO list LO10758

You may have noticed slow turn-around on the LO list in the last 24
hours. And, there are some delays in messages appearing on the LO web
pages. Here's the story... one of fun and games on the internet...

Our supplier (world.std.com) was subject of an attack last night in which
someone sent computer-generated requests to obtain the subscriber lists of
all 700 mailing lists operating here at World. The object appears to have
been to obtain a large list of email addresses for sending "junk" emails,
or possibly worse. (Some people here recently received a child porn
advertisement, but this was probably a hoax because it had a real name and
return address.)

Anyway, the staff here was able to intercept and block the attack, but
this slowed down the mail system.

For what it's worth, I have set things up so it's impossible to obtain the
subscriber list for LO. However, if you do post msgs to the list, then
your email address is visible to the public and it's possible you may
receive junk mail as a result. I recommend ignoring most of these and
forwarding the objectionable ones to postmaster at the originating domain.
