I am interested in establishing an internet forum for sharing Best
Demonstrated Practice (BDP) in managing entrepreneurial "knowledge
based" ventures. The content and style of interaction with participants
would lead to the development (over time) of an integrated framework for
the value based management of entrepreneurial knowledge ventures. I am
in the process of writing a brief introduction to the principles of
value based management, and will make this available on request.

For the purposes of focus in the early stages of the forum, I am hoping
to limit the discussion to ventures in the internet or multimedia
publishing industries. These industries would provide ideal case
studies because of their highly cross functional nature (ie, the
creative talents of graphic artists, the network skills of systems
gurus, programming skills, database expertsise systems integration and
project management). The forum would seek to extend the insights gained
from preliminary research in internet and multimedia publishing
industries to other knowledge based industries.

The following issues are likely to be central to an integrated framework
for the value based management of knowledge ventures:

project team structure, including issues of specialisation of skills,
management leverage, work stream interdependencies, creative freedom,
and control and coordination. Alternative project team structures have
implications on costs, level and qaulity of output, career development
and enhancing long term organisational capabilities

deploying the latest technologies in the product development cycle

workgroup productivity hardware and software tools to facilitate the
free exchange of project deliverables, ideas, code modules, fixes, etc

 resource allocation to projects

managing the career development cycle, including recruitment,
compensation, performance reviews, training and mentoring

developing core training modules suitable for each role (ie software
engineering, networking, project management, etc)

the role of the visionary leader

In order to establish such a forum, I am interested in hearing from
people who are either working in, or have consulted for internet or
multimedia publishing businesses, and who are willing (and able) to
share the tools, frameworks and practices used in building the
capabilities of their organisations that have resulted in an advantaged
offer and superior profitability. Also, I would be looking for someone
to host a Web site to be the focus of interaction amongst members.

[Host's Note: I've learned quite a bit about creating a forum on the
internet; my "recipe" is available to anyone; just email me
(rkarash@karash.com) with the subject line "Net Recipe". ...Rick]

Sincerely
Marvin Schneider
