Interesting challenge. Please expand my understanding of this. If we
view the system as a whole and then attempt change, do we not have to
address the component pieces and the way each relates to the whole? Isn't
this a move back toward a reductionist approach?

I wholeheartedly agree with the last part of this (trying to understand
the first part). As we sink deeper into the bureaucratic structure life
becomes increasingly murky. After a time we tend to become afraid to
raise our heads and become recognized because this would disturb the
murkiness and serve to further obscure our view of the world. Imagine
this metaphor as literally a murky lake. If you start thrashing about you
will first stir up the "murk" before you rise to the top and greater
clarity. It is easy to become disoriented and frightened even more when
our view becomes more distorted.
