Mary

First
>Thank you for noticing that I might have been replying to the unlearning
thread.>

I tried to acknowledge, privately, everyone who replied to my original
question and explain I that I did not want to start too many separate
conversations on the list. Apologies for not extending you that courtesy.
It was unintended.

Second

>Are we (adults in general and/or people on this listserv) so abstract that
seeing what cognitive theory says about human *un*learning (not just for
kids) as a major part of learning doesn't jibe with unlearning in changing
organizations? >

I hope not.

Third

>Is "intuition" different from whatever we know as children after learning
to walk?>

I don't know.

>How could I have presented the ideas so that people saw my contribution as
a part of the conversation?>

I DON'T KNOW Mary. Maybe that's part of what we are trying to find out
here. How do we remember to present ideas, and react to ideas so that they
are part of learning conversations?

What I have discovered since starting this enquiry is that 'Unlearning'
produces very different reactions in different groups of people. Some see
it as unecessary, some as beneficial.

I think [thanks Brock and Michael] we have arrived at an idea of unlearning
that works, at least for some, as *loosening the grip of the past*. For me
this can mean either

being 'free with' our past 'mental conditioning'

or

being 'free of' it.

I am also interested in the disicpline of simply holding our heads open to
new idea and not simply replacing one mental model with another. You might
say of staying *UNFROZEN* [Keith LO 9653]I sense the inquiry leads towards
really using more of our potential as people.

I hope future contributions may offer insights into the theory and practice
of doing it, as individuals and in organisations.

I aim to 'lurk' on the thread for the next several days but will offer to
try and synthesise any other contributions that take the enquiry forwards.
