Traci Hoard offers a great description of what need to happen to allow the
passion for learning to be fully expressed. You mentor was smart enough to
pay attention to you and identify the "aspiration" (Michael Erickson's
term), and then support you all the way! I would say, as Deming once said,
that everybody is born with the inner desire to learn, but it is the
different systems we are exposed to that kill that desire. There are many
things we do in all educational systems, for instance, to kill the "vision
and aspiration" that our students bring with them. I see that only a few
survive that mass killing, and it is general because of some external
support (such as parentes and other adults in the family). I also believe
that this should be the major area of inquiry right now. How many of the
things we do in organizations (schools, business, etc.) act as "the forces
of destruction" (Deming's term) and how to change them?
