Several contributors have commented on the difficulty of establishing
general education goals, measuring results and holding schools
accountable.

Here are more resources for those interested in looking into Education
Goals and Standards and what states and the federal government are doing
in this area.

The Mid-continent Regional Education Laboratory has produced a 607 page
volume that presents standards and benchmarks in 13 disciplines - math,
science, history, language arts, geography, arts, civics, economics,
health, foreign language, physical education, behavioral studies, and life
skills.

See their website at http://www.mcrel.org.products/

Also available from MCREL is a briefing paper entitled The Fall and Rise
of Standards-Based Education

Also the latest issue of the newsletter of the Center for Research on
Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) focuses on performance
standards - those that tell us how well students have learned something
and an examination of equity concerns in the implementation of standards.

See their website: http://www.cse.ucla.edu. The website also links to
"Developing Educational Standards," a site devoted to standards from which
users can access numerous other sites.
