Malcolm, I recommend the book "Flow" by an author whose name begins
with M and which I can't recreate on the road as I am. (Something
like M. Mikalymikaly..... try your bookstore or see the back of my
book The Intelligence Advantage for full reference)
[Host's Note: _Flow_ by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is a book which I also
recommend. It's currently in local bookstores in a paperback edition.

This is based at least partially in theories of complex adaptive systems
(its very readable, not technical or mathematical) and refers to a zone
where there is a balance between the states.
The problem of thinking which you demonstrate in your note and is common
is part of the problem of this whole area. It isn't a question of
"either-or". It isn't a question of one or the other. We are constantly
in states which have more or less of one component or the other. The
world of humans is much more complex than "either-or".
