Hi Fides,
I am with you. Your comments on formal\informal " Email communication"
makes a lot of sense to me. It is true that I try to understand somebody
here through his\her words appearing on the screen ONLY.. and based on
this an opinion (many times a biased one)about a character is formed.
Here our own value system, beliefs, attitude, earlier experiences etc play
a major role to COLOUR our perception about an individual and then we try
to LABEL others this way or that way . This is happening with all (with
due apology to those who think otherwise & stand out as ODD MAN OUT in
this crowd), with you, with me & with others, no body is an exception to
this (except ODD MAN OUTS).
I agree with you when you say that while reading a view-point on the
screen, you often wonder how this person looks like, what may be the
expressions on her\his face, what kind of chair he is sitting on etc.
Yes.. some of us think of this consciously, others may form an opinion or
a frame sub-consciously, a few may not at all think of the person or a
personality (there focus may be more on the view- point or thought & how
to respond to that rather than a person).
It means this media has a few limitations which may benefit or adversely
affect an individual depending mostly on her\his written communication
style. She\he may not be as evil\devil or as sophisticated\good as she\he
appears to be on the screen. This communication system lacks ( with due
recognition to its limitations) basic fundamentals of a complete
communication which include EYE CONTACT, FACIAL EXPRESSIONS, OTHER BODY
LANGUAGE\SIGNALS etc, that determines the quality of a communication or
conversation or dialogue.
Since we all are communicating basically through dialogues in written
form, theses limitations are to be kept in mind which may help keep our
biases towards other at the minimum, at least temporarily.
- IS THAT TRUE..?
