"Complexity and Strategy: Productive Applications of Complexity Theory". These are similar to those of

We were the co-founders and Chairpersons of two conferences, in San
Francisco and London, jointly sponsored by us and the Santa Fe
Institute. These conferences featured many of the SFI researchers as
well as others engaged in related areas applicable to corporate
affairs. Over two hundred participants from many of the world's
largest companies and industries from manufacturing to hi-tech to
services shared the experience enthusiastically and, from this
interest and later developments, we created seminars for those who
didn't attend but have expressed interest in applied work.

The emphasis in the seminars is on dialogue, not presentation, within
a structure designed to be both rigorous and creative. The goal is
to answer two questions: "What are the implications of these new
theories and methodologies for organisation?" and "How can these be
applied to contemporary business challenges such as strategy formulation,
innovation, culture change and problem solving?"

The seminars will cover such areas as:
- Understanding complexity and complex adaptive systems such as
markets, organisations and industries.
- Developing techniques for organisations to examine their models,
metaphors and beliefs and adapt new ones as conditions change.
- Creating strategies of innovation and design for businesses to
interact with the unexpected, accidental and ambiguous in their
environments.
- Resolving the tensions between stability and creativity, authorised
and natural, engineered and innovative.
- Examining individual interests, issues and case studies as they
emerge.
