Any reader interested in arguments for hierarchy could turn to the work of
Elliott Jaques. He has been writing on this topic for thirty (or forty?)
years. I doubt whether his:
'Requisite Organisation: the CEO's guide to creative structure and
leadership' Published 1989: Cason Hall ISBN 09621-07-00X
is obsolete in the age of 'flattened' organisations. BTW, although it
is some time since I last saw it, I recall that he panders to our
left brain & right brain by having text on one facing page and
diagrams on the other.
