Replying to LO6819 --

Replying/ building on many contributions to this thread - which I have
managed to resist doing until now.

It seems to me we all - in any form of social discource - have a habit of
settling into convenient patterns of language and associated conventions
of polite behaviour [NOTHING ORIGINAL, VARIOUS PEOPLE HAVE SAID IT ON THE
THREAD AND MANY OFF].

This is useful. Without it there would be no conversation enabled.

This is also dangerous. With it we get settled into convention.

To reach a different place requires an interruption of the existing
pattern, especially the existing conversation. Whether that interruption
occurs as 'ooh wow', spirited, impolite, rude, bullshit or anything else
depends on the listening [reading] of the receiver]. Let us though be
ready for interruptions. Without them no prevailing pattern is shifted,
and - I SUBMIT - nothing is learnt.

P.S. Rick - keep moderating exactly as you are at present. I vote for all
your expressions of principle.
