On this subject I can share my experiences with college students in four
different states. We all know that generalized asumptions about students:
lazy, always looking for a shor cut, can't take responsibility for their
own learning, .... Well, one of the greatest "findings" for me (and David
Fearon, at Central Connecticut State U.), is that the great majority of
the students do not fit the assumptions. It is the system that forces
them to behave as kids. We treat them as adults, and they respond as
adults!
I follow Deming's ideas that everybody is born with the innate desire to
learn, to work, to take responsibility... it is the many "Dr. Killjoy's"
out there who kill these desires!
