Marion says, "Gee whiz. I raised a question about "educating for work."
Now I find myself doing the same thing with 'educating for
citizenship.'....My alternative is that ancient one: Know thyself."

My only point is that you, John, and I could develop a hell of a
curriculum framework, a dynamite professional development program, and a
very, very fine literature in support of all three of these goals, and not
have a serious difference of opinion for about 100 years. At some very
refined point in the future, these goals may diverge, but we're not there,
and we're not even close enough to be really sure that they will diverge.

I do not minimize the point you are making. I suspect that ultimately you
are right -- no one can truly and deeply serve an organization until they
truly know themselves. All I mean to say is that no matter which
definition you choose, you will not find many business leaders who
disagree with you.

I recently participated in a course on leadership, for example. The
central thrust was, leadership begins with yourself. Once you provide
good leadership to yourself, then you may be prepared to provide
leadership in a larger context. My company thought this would be good for
me, so they sent me. They are not making the distinctions you and I and
John are making. To them, it is all one.
