Con Kenny says, "Based on Chris Meyer's distinction between
cross-functional and multi-functional teams, I was suggesting that
cross-functional teams rarely move out of the storming stage. Is your
experience different?"

I have not seen the distinction alluded to batween cross-functional and
multi-functional teams. For me teams consisting of several functional
specialties (at least 2) who are interdependent -- dependent on each other
for success -- are cross-functional teams.

My experience is that if success is clearly defined in that team
environment, and if finger-pointing -- "it's his fault I didn't succeed"
-- is forbidden, then these teams do often arrive at norming and
performing stages. However, it requires each individual to take personal
responsibility for the team's success.

When specific personalities who do not accept those ground rules are on
the team, then the team will not progress. Personality plays a huge role
in success.
